Hollandsche IJssel storm barrier closes against high water

Rijkswaterstaat shut the storm surge barrier at Krimpen aan den IJssel on Sunday evening. It is expected to reopen on Monday morning.

Rijkswaterstaat closed the Hollandsche IJsselkering at Krimpen aan den IJssel in South Holland on Sunday evening to protect the hinterland from high water. The barrier is expected to reopen on Monday at around 10:00.

According to Rijkswaterstaat, the barrier closes on average three to four times a year. It is one of the thirteen Deltawerken (Delta Works) and was the first one finished, five years after the 1953 flood disaster.
