Cabinet to name site for two nuclear plants in December

The cabinet expects to announce in early December whether the two new nuclear power plants will go to the Eemshaven in Groningen or to Terneuzen in Zeeland. The state has already secured priority on land at both sites.

The cabinet expects to announce in early December where it wants to build two new nuclear power plants: the Eemshaven in Groningen or Terneuzen in Zeeland. Ministry officials will meet residents in Uithuizen, near the Eemshaven, on Monday 26 October.

The cabinet has already claimed pre-emption rights (voorkeursrecht) on land at the intended locations in both places. That gives the state priority when the land is sold.

Near the Eemshaven, the possible sites are the Emmapolder and the Eemscentrale.

Officials from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate will hold an information evening on Monday 26 October, between 19:00 and 21:00, in the St. Vincentiusgebouw in Uithuizen. Two information meetings in Zeeland follow in the days after.

Opponents of nuclear energy are preparing a demonstration against the plants on 15 November on the Grote Markt in Groningen.
