Sinterklaas arrival may skip Rotterdam's Carnisse this year
The annual Sinterklaas arrival (intocht) threatens to skip the Rotterdam neighbourhood of Carnisse this year after a neighbourhood council refused to pay towards it.
At a rowdy meeting, the neighbourhood council (wijkraad) in Carnisse voted against making money available for the Sinterklaas arrival. The event may now skip the Rotterdam neighbourhood this year.
One of the councils involved considers the celebration "no longer of this time" ("niet meer van deze tijd") and does not want to help pay for it. The decision has sparked heated discussion in the neighbourhood.

wijkraad
A wijkraad is a neighbourhood council: a local body that represents a wijk (neighbourhood) within a Dutch municipality and takes part in decisions on matters affecting that area. It gives residents a formal voice in local issues, such as how neighbourhood activities and funds are used, and it works alongside the municipal government.
