Budget supermarket brands 6% cheaper, well-known brands 2% dearer
Well-known brands in Dutch supermarkets cost on average 2% more than a year ago, while budget brands became 6% cheaper, a Consumentenbond price survey shows.
A-brands, the well-known brand-name products such as Milka and Unox, are on average 2% more expensive than a year ago, according to a price survey by the Consumentenbond. Budget brands, such as supermarket own brands, became 6% cheaper over the same period.
The gap is wider over three years. Compared with three years ago, A-brands cost 16% more and budget brands 2% more. The Consumentenbond says the rise in A-brand prices is levelling off somewhat, but not for every product.
Some products rose much more. A bag of Unox Chinese tomato soup is 36% more expensive than a year ago, the biggest increase on the list.
