Storm Austen brings down trees across Limburg and Noord-Brabant

The KNMI says gusts in the northern provinces will continue all day Sunday.

Storm Austen caused damage in many places last night, mainly in the south of the Netherlands. Limburg and Noord-Brabant had many reports of fallen trees and branches on roads. As far as is known, nobody was injured.

The highest gust measured was 91 km/h in Vlissingen. There were also strong gusts on the Zuid-Holland coast and in the south of Limburg. The storm had caused disruption in France and England the previous morning, then crossed the Netherlands in weakened form.

In Amsterdam a tree fell on a moving car. The driver escaped with a fright. Fire crews were busy in many places clearing trees and branches from roads.

Code yellow tonight

The wind has eased and the KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, has withdrawn its earlier warning. But code yellow applies from 22:00 tonight in Noord-Holland, Friesland, Groningen and the Wadden region. The KNMI warns of strong gusts, possibly up to 100 km/h on Texel and Vlieland. The gusts will continue all day Sunday.
