Peek & Cloppenburg closes Amsterdam's Dam store after 110 years

The fashion retailer's Dam shop in central Amsterdam will close for good at the end of February, and the company says it cannot rule out compulsory redundancies among its staff.

Peek & Cloppenburg will close its store on the Dam in Amsterdam for good at the end of February, a spokesperson at the company's head office in Düsseldorf confirmed. The shop has traded there for 110 years.

Staff have been told. The company is trying to spread the employees over its remaining Dutch stores, but the spokesperson said it cannot rule out compulsory redundancies.

The spokesperson said the decision followed a "careful consideration". "Few local residents visit this location," the spokesperson said. "At the same time, the building no longer meets current technical standards."

According to the company, the Düsseldorf-based branch of Peek & Cloppenburg, which includes the Dutch stores, still has 170 stores in 16 countries across Europe.
