A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to six years' imprisonment for shooting another man in the stomach on the Rhôneweg in Amsterdam Nieuw-West on the morning of 20 April. The two men met on the road, argued and scuffled, and the weapon, a converted alarm pistol, went off. The bullet hit the other man in the stomach.

No vital organs were hit, but the bullet has to stay in the victim's body and could move.

The court found no premeditation. The man did not shoot when the two first met, and he did not take aim during the argument. Given the seriousness of the offence, it saw no grounds for a fully or partly suspended sentence.

The evening before, the man had searched 13 times on his phone for how long a sentence for murder is. After his arrest he phoned his sister with a police officer present. He told her he would get 25 years' imprisonment and that he had wanted to call her the evening before to say goodbye.

The court said: "Such acts strengthen feelings of fear and insecurity in society."
