Tax plan needs opposition votes within two weeks

The coalition is back in talks with opposition parties on the tax plan (belastingplan) and next year's budgets. It has less than two weeks to find a majority in parliament.

The cabinet is again holding talks with opposition parties on the tax plan and next year's budgets. It wants to send an amended plan to the Tweede Kamer by Tuesday at the latest. The plenary debate on the tax legislation is scheduled for a day later.

Prime Minister Jetten said at his weekly press conference on Friday that the cabinet is "not prepared to take steps back" on its approach to the nitrogen crisis or on "important achievements for women's rights". JA21, BBB and SGP have made their support for the plan conditional on asylum, nitrogen and medical-ethical issues. The cabinet turned them down on Friday.

PRO and Volt said they hope to be invited to keep talking.

ChristenUnie and 50PLUS hold only five seats between them, so they cannot give the cabinet a majority without another party.

Early next week the Kamer will also learn how the cabinet will proceed on box 3, the tax on savings and investments. The cabinet has received advice from the Council of State (Raad van State) on Wednesday and will work its criticism into the bill. It will also say how it wants to pay for introducing a capital gains tax (vermogenswinstbelasting).
