KNMI to issue local code yellow, orange and red warnings from 2 November
From 2 November, KNMI weather warnings will cover smaller, changing areas instead of whole provinces, so people will know more precisely where dangerous weather is expected.
The KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, will start issuing local warnings for dangerous weather on 2 November. They will use code yellow, code orange and code red, and will no longer apply per province.
Warnings will instead apply to smaller, changing areas ("flexible areas", flexibele gebieden). According to the KNMI, people will hear more precisely where dangerous weather is expected.
Until now a code orange could apply to a whole province, or the country, even when nothing was wrong where someone lived. The new approach aims to change that.
KNMI (Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut)
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute is the Dutch national institute for weather, climate and seismic research. It produces weather forecasts and issues the official weather warnings for the Netherlands, such as those for storms, heavy rain or extreme heat.
code oranje
Code oranje is the middle of the three KNMI weather warning levels, below code rood and above code geel. It is issued when weather is dangerous enough to call for precautions, such as storms, heavy rain, snow or extreme heat.
