Dense fog in the south of Utrecht province and parts of three neighbouring provinces has triggered the first weather warning that does not cover a whole province.

The weather institute KNMI has issued a code yellow for dense fog in a narrowly defined area: the south of Utrecht province, the north of Noord-Brabant and small parts of Gelderland and Zuid-Holland. It is the first regional code yellow the KNMI has issued. Until 1 November, weather warnings were always issued per province.

The KNMI says the fog can cause dangerous situations and delays on the roads. The warning marks out exactly where the fog is expected to cause problems: in Wijk bij Duurstede, but not in Rhenen or Dordrecht.

Until 1 November, KNMI weather warnings were always issued per province. If it was slippery in the north of Noord-Holland, for example, the whole province got a code yellow, orange or red. In heavy rain or storms, four or five provinces were sometimes warned at once.

Since 1 November the institute has pinpointed more precisely where dangerous weather is expected. "That way you can see more exactly whether the dangerous weather is coming your way, and you can get ready," the KNMI said.

On the KNMI website and app, anyone can zoom in or search by place of residence. The data can also be downloaded for use in your own maps or applications.

The KNMI also warns of other kinds of dangerous weather, including slipperiness, heat, cold, thunderstorms, snow, heavy gusts of wind and heavy rain.
