First asylum applications fall 13% in third quarter

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) counted almost 5,900 first asylum applications in July to September, the first full quarter under the EU migration pact. Separately, fewer family members of refugees came to the Netherlands.

Almost 5,900 people filed a first asylum application in the Netherlands in the third quarter of 2026, 850 fewer than a year earlier, CBS reports. That is 13% fewer. The figures are based on first provisional data from the IND, the immigration service. It was the first full quarter after the EU migration pact came into force.

Over the first three quarters of 2026, applications were still 8% higher than in the same period a year earlier. The third quarter was down 3% on the second.
