Driver killed on A2 at Breukelen fell ill at the wheel, police say
Police say an investigation found the driver who died in Saturday's crash on the A2 became unwell while driving, and they no longer use the term wrong-way driver.
The driver who died in a serious crash on the A2 motorway near Breukelen last Saturday became unwell while driving, police announced on Thursday after an investigation. The car ended up on the opposite carriageway and hit two other cars.
The collision happened at around 12.00. The driver of the car that crossed over died. One of the other drivers was injured and the other was unhurt.
Witnesses told officers the car first drove on the motorway from Amsterdam towards Utrecht before it ended up on the other carriageway.
Police had earlier described the driver as a wrong-way driver (spookrijder). They no longer use that word, given what caused the crash.
spookrijder
A spookrijder is a wrong-way driver: someone who drives against the official direction of traffic, usually on a motorway or other divided road. In the Netherlands the word is used in traffic reports and by police for any vehicle travelling the wrong way on a carriageway, whatever the reason. It matters because wrong-way driving is a serious danger to other road users, and authorities often issue warnings about it.
