Bitcoin platform Bitonic says it will report hack to police
Bitonic, a bitcoin broker, says a hacker took over five customer accounts on Sunday and stole bitcoins from three customers, who have been fully compensated.
Bitcoin company Bitonic says it will report to the police this week a hack on Sunday evening, in which, according to the company, a cybercriminal took over five customer accounts. On Wednesday Bitonic said it had secured the forensic evidence so that it can hand it to the police.
Bitonic announced on Monday that bitcoins of three customers were stolen. Those customers have since been fully compensated.
Bitonic says it has no indication that customers' personal data were taken beyond the five hijacked accounts, the company said "As long as our investigation continues, we cannot yet fully rule that out,".
According to Bitonic, the hacker exploited a software flaw in the function the company uses to process PDF files. The company has reported the incident to the AFM, the financial markets regulator, and to the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, the data protection authority.
