Abortions among girls under 15 rise to 163, up from 65 a year earlier
The number of abortions in the Netherlands rose slightly in 2025, but among girls under 15 it was more than 2.5 times the 2024 figure, according to the health inspectorate.
The number of abortions in the Netherlands rose slightly in 2025 to almost 40,000, an increase of 1.25 percent on 2024. The figures come from the annual report of the health and youth care inspectorate (IGJ).
The rise is far steeper among the youngest teenagers. In 2025, 163 girls under 15 had an abortion, by far the highest number in years. A year earlier the inspectorate registered 65 abortions, so the figure is more than 2.5 times as high.
Teenage girls as a whole had more abortions last year than in the years before. The relative increase is largest in the youngest age group, the IGJ figures show.
In the six years before, the number of abortions among young teens fluctuated roughly between fifty and just over a hundred. Last year stands out clearly.

The Health and Youth Care Inspectorate is the Dutch government body that supervises healthcare, youth care and related services, checking that providers meet legal quality and safety standards. It publishes reports on its findings, including an annual report, which is where the article's abortion figures come from.
