Wrong-way driver dies in crash on A2 near Breukelen

A driver going the wrong way on the A2 between Utrecht and Amsterdam died after hitting two cars near Breukelen, the police said.

A driver who was going the wrong way on the A2 near Breukelen died in a crash with two other cars around noon on Saturday, the police said.

According to witnesses, the driver first drove along the motorway from Amsterdam towards Utrecht and then ended up on the other carriageway, the police said. Near the Breukelen exit the car collided with two other cars. One of the other two drivers was injured. The third driver was unhurt.

The police are asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward.

The motorway between Utrecht and Breukelen was closed for the investigation, which caused a tailback of about an hour and a half, the motorists' organisation ANWB said. Two lanes have since reopened. Traffic towards Amsterdam is still advised to take the A12, A27 and A1.
