Sinkholes were discovered on Sunday morning on the Crooswijksestraat and the Hendrikstraat in Rotterdam's Crooswijk district. An underground water leak caused them, the Veiligheidsregio Rotterdam-Rijnmond said. The streets have been cordoned off.

The leak flooded the crawl spaces of homes. It also washed sand away, creating the holes.

Evides has shut off the drinking water to several homes on the Crooswijksestraat so it can repair the leak. The water in the crawl spaces must be pumped out first. After that, the homes will get drinking water again.

The safety region advises residents to turn off all taps. "That way you prevent possible leaks when you have water again," it said.
