Police say almost 50 season-ticket accounts at fifteen Eredivisie clubs were hacked and their login details sold, and buyers of tickets bought through hacked accounts were turned away at SC Heerenveen's stadium.

A 31-year-old man from Rotterdam was arrested at his home in Pernis on Monday 19 October on suspicion of identity fraud, the police say. Officers seized data storage devices, which will be examined.

Police say they have so far established identity fraud on almost 50 accounts across fifteen Eredivisie clubs. The season-ticket holders' accounts were hacked so that their login details could be resold. The clubs have been asked to report it to the police.

The fraud came to light at the end of May. SC Heerenveen found that an employee's account had been hacked and that football tickets were being offered on Marktplaats in his name. The club reported it to the police, who opened an investigation.

Police say buyers thought they were dealing with the rightful season-ticket holder and bought the login details in good faith. As a precaution, SC Heerenveen had invalidated tickets bought through hacked accounts. These buyers were therefore turned away at the stadium, even though they had paid.
