Nebius signs as first customer of planned AI gigafactory at Rotterdam port
The Amsterdam-based AI cloud company has committed to what is planned to become the largest AI data centre in the Netherlands.
Han de Groot, head of Volt Datacenters (VOLT), has confirmed that Nebius is the first major customer of the AI gigafactory (AI-gigafabriek) his company plans to build in the Rotterdam port.
VOLT is the initiator of the project. The factory is planned on the Maasvlakte, and it is set to become the largest AI data centre in the Netherlands.
Nebius is an AI cloud company that operates internationally. Its headquarters are in Amsterdam.
With the deal, the initiators hope the deal gives the AI factory on the Maasvlakte a real chance of success.
Maasvlakte
The Maasvlakte is an area of artificial land that extends into the North Sea and forms part of the Port of Rotterdam. It is mostly used for container terminals, heavy industry and energy facilities, so it is one of the main industrial sites in the port. Its mention here means the AI gigafactory would be built on this reclaimed land within the port.
