PRO and CDA MPs want to scrap triple fine increase

Fatihya Abdi (PRO) and Jeltje Straatman (CDA) want to overhaul the fine system so that people who pay late face smaller increases.

Fatihya Abdi (PRO) and Jeltje Straatman (CDA), members of the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of parliament, want to scrap the tripling of fines that are not paid. A fine for non-payers can now rise to three times the original amount. Under the plan, these increases would be halved.

Their plan would also require the cabinet to submit every fine increase to parliament.

They argue that traffic fines have risen faster than criminal-law fines, and that gaps in the budget, not road safety, drove the increases. "A small traffic offence in 1990 led to a fine of (converted) €68.06. In 2026 the same person has to pay €490 for it," their plan states.
