Dashboard on new medicine reimbursement gets filters and a glossary
The renewed Dashboard Doorlooptijden Geneesmiddelen shows how far new medicines have got in the reimbursement procedure, with filters, explanations and a glossary added.
The online dashboard on lead times for new medicines (Dashboard Doorlooptijden Geneesmiddelen) has been renewed. It shows where a new medicine stands in the procedure that decides whether it is reimbursed. Patients, pharmacists, prescribers and medicine manufacturers contributed their experiences and wishes to the update.
The dashboard covers the phases of the reimbursement procedure: the manufacturer submits the reimbursement dossier to Zorginstituut Nederland, the Zorginstituut assesses the medicine, and the manufacturer and the Ministry of Health (VWS) negotiate on price.
The phases now come with explanations, and the dashboard has a glossary to help users interpret the information.
Many medicines are reimbursed automatically through basic health insurance, but not all. The health minister can decide to keep a new medicine out of the basic insurance temporarily because of a high price. That gives the Zorginstituut time to assess whether the medicine works and whether its price is in proportion to the health improvement. If not, it advises VWS to negotiate the price with the manufacturer.

Dashboard Doorlooptijden Geneesmiddelen
The Dashboard Doorlooptijden Geneesmiddelen is an online dashboard showing the lead times of new medicines: how long each medicine takes to move through the procedure that decides whether it is reimbursed in the Netherlands. It shows where a new medicine currently stands in that procedure, so patients, pharmacists, prescribers and medicine manufacturers can follow its progress. The dashboard is based partly on experiences these groups have shared about the process.
