Antique vase in Amsterdam museum since 1997 goes back to Sicily
An antique vase that has stood in an Amsterdam museum since 1997 is being returned to Sicily after research into its origins.
An antique vase displayed in the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam is being returned to Sicily on Wednesday. It has been on display there since 1997.
Research into the vase shows it was likely looted from a grave by local tombaroli, the Italian word for grave robbers, and then sold.
Old photographs provided evidence of the theft.
The vase spent 29 years in Amsterdam. On Wednesday it goes back to Sicily.
