Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is a network of protected nature areas across the European Union designed to preserve endangered species and habitats. The Netherlands has 162 Natura 2000 sites covering forests, wetlands, dunes, and coastal areas. These sites are strictly protected from pollution and development that would harm their ecological value, which is why nitrogen deposition rules apply to projects near them.
