Key terms explained

Gas storage
Underground sites, mostly empty gas fields and salt caverns, that are filled in summer when gas is cheap and drawn down in winter when homes need heating.
Bergermeer and Norg
The two largest Dutch storage sites: Bergermeer is an empty gas field near Alkmaar, Norg one in Drenthe.
Filling target
EU rules ask member states to have storage 90% full at some point between 1 October and 1 December; the target was made more flexible in 2025.
TWh
Terawatt hours, the unit gas in storage is measured in: the energy the gas would give when burned.
