rechter-commissaris
The examining magistrate is a judge of the district court who supervises the criminal investigation before trial. The rechter-commissaris authorises coercive investigative powers, such as pre-trial detention (voorlopige hechtenis) and telephone tapping, and can hear witnesses and suspects. Appearing before the rechter-commissaris is a step in the Dutch criminal process that happens before the case goes to trial.
