Police figures for 2025 and to September 2026
Safest and least safe places in the Netherlands
Bike theft, burglary, theft from cars, pickpocketing and violence, gemeente by gemeente: how often the police record them where you live, compared with the rest of the country and with towns your size.
FewerMore, per 1,000 residents
Where crime is recorded
Among towns of 50,000 people or more, the police record the most crime per resident in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven, and the least in Westerkwartier, De Fryske Marren and Goeree-Overflakkee. The Dutch average is 45.2 crimes per 1,000 residents a year. Darker means more.
Bike theft
The most common theft the police record. Amsterdam records 14.2 stolen bikes per 1,000 residents a year, 2.6 times the Dutch rate; Groningen and Nijmegen follow.
Home burglary
Across the Netherlands about 1 home in 385 was burgled in 2025. The rate is highest in Amstelveen, Utrechtse Heuvelrug and Roosendaal: 1 home in 185 in Amstelveen.
Violence
Assault, threats, public violence and street robbery together: highest in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Heerlen. City centres with nightlife count incidents involving people who live elsewhere. The Dutch rate is 4.3 per 1,000 residents.
Arson and explosions
Fires set on purpose and explosions, including explosives set off at front doors: 3.1 recorded per 10,000 residents across the country in 2025, most among larger towns in Arnhem, Bergen op Zoom and Assen.

How to read these figures
- Recorded, not experienced
- These are crimes the police registered, from a report or from their own checks. Crimes nobody reports are missing, so a town where people report more can look worse. The survey line in each card shows how safe residents themselves feel.
- Visitors count too
- A town with a busy centre, nightlife, a station or tourists counts crimes against people who do not live there, so its rate per resident looks higher than the risk for residents. Compare a town with towns like it.
- Small numbers
- A change this year is shown only when at least 20 such crimes were recorded in both periods; from 2 to 4 is not a doubling of risk.
- Burglary per home
- Home burglary is counted per 1,000 households, so "1 in 300 homes" reads as the chance for one household in a year.
