The Passion will charge visitors for the first time. A ticket for next year's edition in Ootmarsum costs €7.50. The event takes place on the town's historic Kerkplein square and will be broadcast live on NPO 1, as in earlier editions. Organiser KRO-NCRV announced the ticket requirement on its website.

Why it matters

  • Entry to The Passion in Ootmarsum costs €7.50. Earlier editions were free.
  • Residents of Ootmarsum get priority in ticket sales.
  • People who have already booked a hotel get no such priority.

KRO-NCRV says space in the historic centre is limited and only a "limited number" of tickets will be sold. "With tickets we can plan well in advance for the number of visitors and make sure the event runs safely and pleasantly," the broadcaster says on its website.

It calls the €7.50 "a modest charge to cover the administrative and organisational costs of welcoming and looking after the public on site". Because every location is different, it says, each edition needs a different approach.

The Passion has been organised since 2011. This year it was held in a village for the first time, Dwingeloo in Drenthe, which has about 4,000 inhabitants. Ootmarsum has about 4,500. The location was announced in September by the Poaskearls, who traditionally walk through Ootmarsum's streets to announce Easter.
