Royal Schiphol Group wants to raise its stake in Maastricht Aachen Airport (MAA) from 40 to 80 percent. It has made an offer to the Province of Limburg, which would stay on as a shareholder with 20 percent.

Schiphol Group says the proposal still needs further decisions and final agreements. It will go to the Provincial Council of Limburg (Provinciale Staten) for approval. Schiphol Group and the province will develop the proposal further and make additional agreements.

Schiphol Group has held 40 percent of MAA since 2023. It also owns and runs Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Rotterdam The Hague Airport and Lelystad Airport, and holds a majority stake in Eindhoven Airport, the company says.

In 2025 MAA handled about 41,600 tonnes of air cargo and 159,000 passengers, Schiphol Group says. It calls MAA the Netherlands' second-largest cargo airport, with expertise in vulnerable and time-critical cargo such as flowers and pharmaceuticals, and says passenger flights leave from Maastricht for various European destinations.

According to Schiphol Group, MAA will take over part of the air traffic during the temporary closure of Eindhoven Airport in 2027, with holiday flights to various European destinations, including Alicante, Málaga, Faro, Crete, Rhodes and Tenerife.

Schiphol Group says it wants to work with MAA and the province to build "a strong, financially healthy and future-proof airport". The province says that as a minority shareholder it will remain actively involved and keep supporting the airport's move towards a sustainable, community-conscious future.

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) figures show MAA had 20,659 passengers in April 2026 (17,500 in April 2025) and 21,256 in May (19,740 in May 2025).
