Police to re-assess part of 10,000-plus unhandled reports
Justice Minister David van Weel says the police will re-assess some of the reports and notifications from 2024 that were never dealt with, starting with the most serious offences, but not all of them.
The police will re-assess part of the more than 10,000 unhandled reports and notifications from 2024, Justice Minister David van Weel (VVD) wrote in a letter to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of parliament, on Wednesday.
Van Weel says re-assessing every unhandled report is not feasible. The re-assessment covers in any case all reports of (attempted) murder and manslaughter and serious sex offences.
In 2024, 9,063 reports to the police (aangiften) went unhandled, plus 1,041 notifications for cases where no report was filed. Re-assessing all of them could mean new reports are picked up later, and would affect the length of court cases and the enforcement of sentences, the minister says.
