Jetten sees no coalition block on higher wealth tax

Prime Minister Rob Jetten said in the tax debate that coalition parties are not blocking an opposition plan to tax wealth more heavily, although the VVD calls approval unthinkable.

Prime Minister Rob Jetten says he does not see the coalition parties D66, VVD and CDA blocking a higher tax on wealth. He was speaking in the parliamentary tax debate, where the opposition plan was discussed.

The plan comes from the opposition parties PRO and Volt. In an amendment, they want to levy more tax on wealth and profits, in order to cut taxes on working people.

VVD MP Wendy van Eijk is not keen on it. She said the proposal clashes with the coalition agreement and called it “unthinkable” that the coalition of D66, VVD and CDA would approve the amendment.

Jetten did not take that as a block. “I've heard tonight from one of the coalition parties that they'll judge it on its merits,” he said.

The prime minister acknowledged that the step is difficult. “That's not an easy call. These are tough political choices, and they touch on the coalition agreement too,” he said. In his words, the coalition parties will have to weigh that up themselves.
