Supplier gas rates for households keep rising as European price tops €100

The European gas price briefly passed €100 per megawatt hour on Wednesday, and the average rate suppliers charge households for gas has been rising since April, CBS figures show.

The European gas price rose above €100 per megawatt hour for a short time on Wednesday afternoon. It was the first time since December 2022.

Gas is getting more expensive because of the conflict in the Middle East, which is disrupting supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The price is still below its 2022 peak. In December 2022 a gas crisis broke out in Europe after Russian gas deliveries almost completely stopped because of the invasion of Ukraine.

Figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) show the average rate suppliers charge households for gas has climbed since April. In September it was €0.66 per cubic metre including VAT, against €0.63 a year earlier. The rate excludes the fixed charge, energy tax and network costs, which are added up below.

What a household pays is more than the supplier's rate. For an average Dutch home, which used 790 cubic metres of gas in 2025, the September rates add up to about €1,458 a year. The gas and the supplier's fixed charge come to €509, the grid operator's transport charge to €222, energy tax to €474 and VAT to €253. Energy tax and VAT together are €727, about half of the bill.

What this means for you

  • A fixed-price contract (contract met een vast tarief) keeps the price per kWh or m3 the same for a set period, for example 1 or 3 years, and then becomes a variable tariff, with new rates announced at least 30 days ahead.
  • A variable tariff contract (contract met een variabel tarief) lets the supplier change the rate, usually at set moments such as every 3 months, with at least 1 month's notice, and cancelling carries no cancellation fee (opzegvergoeding).
  • A time-of-use tariff (contract met een dynamisch tarief) follows wholesale prices. Electricity prices change every quarter-hour, hour or day, and gas prices change daily.
  • A standard contract (modelcontract) is a variable tariff or a 1-year fixed-price deal. A variable tariff may change its rates no more than 4 times a year. Suppliers may charge export charges (terugleverkosten) to customers with solar panels.
