Sliedrecht gang rape suspect must stay in custody

The Rotterdam court ruled that R.H., a Syrian suspect in the Sliedrecht gang rape case, must stay in pre-trial detention. The next hearing is on 9 December.

The district court in Rotterdam has ruled that R.H., a Syrian man, must stay in pre-trial detention for now. He is a suspect in the Sliedrecht gang rape case.

The next hearing is on 9 December.

R.H. has admitted the sex but says it was consensual. His lawyer, Bram de Groen, asked for him to be released for now: "He has no criminal record, has a job, a home and no debts." R.H. said: "I want to go back to work."

The public prosecutor opposed release. "In this case all boundaries were crossed," the prosecutor told the court.

"We also read that you appear in the police files for harassing women," the court told him.
