Hackers steal bitcoin from three Bitonic accounts

Bitonic, a Dutch platform where people and firms trade euros for bitcoin, says it has fully reimbursed the affected customers. It advises users, among other things, to change their password as a precaution.

Bitonic discovered yesterday that unauthorised people had gained access through a security flaw. It took the affected systems offline as a precaution. The attackers still made what the company calls "small, unauthorised bitcoin withdrawals from three accounts". The login details of two accounts were also changed.

Bitonic says it has told the affected customers personally and reimbursed their bitcoins in full. It advises users, among other things, to change their Bitonic password as a precaution.

The company says it cannot rule out that the attacker also viewed other customers' personal data. "Based on what we know now, this does not seem to be the case, but our investigation is still ongoing," it said.

Bitonic apologised: "You entrust us with your bitcoins and your data, and we take that responsibility very seriously." It is still investigating the cause and scale of the problem.
