The road had been closed since Thursday evening because of a dangerous situation at the Aquaduct Mid-Fryslân: the glass panels of the lamps above the road could fall.
The work finished faster than expected. Around 20:00 on Friday the carriageway towards Leeuwarden from Heerenveen had already reopened. During the closure, traffic between Heerenveen and Leeuwarden was diverted via Drachten, over the A7 and the N31.
A contractor removed the light fixtures, the cable trays and the electrical installations. Rijkswaterstaat, the national roads and waterways agency, said the aqueduct's 84 fixtures, 42 in each direction, suffered accelerated wear from intensive traffic, the suction effect of lorries and splashing salt water.
We can say there is material fatigue in the light fixtures. They reached the end of their technical life early.Rijkswaterstaat
Rijkswaterstaat will also examine other aqueducts in the northern Netherlands for wear or damage to their light fixtures.
