The Netherlands, explained

staatssteun

State aid is government support, such as subsidies, favourable loans or tax advantages, given to a company or organisation in a way that gives it an advantage over competitors. Under EU competition rules, such aid is generally not allowed unless it falls under an exemption or is approved in advance by the European Commission. Here it matters because the municipality and province said they could not find a lasting way to keep the Wadden Sea centre running that stayed within these rules.
