The Netherlands, explained

bijstand

Social assistance is the last-resort income support that Dutch municipalities (gemeenten) pay to people and households whose income and assets are too low to cover basic living costs. It is means-tested under the Participatiewet, and recipients are generally expected to look for work or take part in reintegration activities. Because it is run by local municipalities rather than the national government, eligibility and support can differ somewhat between municipalities.
