Huurtoeslag 2026: rent allowance, limits and who can get it

Huurtoeslag is a monthly allowance towards your rent. Whether you get it, and how much, depends on your rent, income, age and household, so there is no single income limit. In 2026 each resident may have at most €38,479 in assets on 1 January (€76,958 for partners together), and rent above €932.93 a month does not count towards the allowance.

Good to know

  • The home must be self-contained: its own front door that locks, its own kitchen and toilet, and since 1 March 2024 its own shower or bath.
  • A houseboat does not qualify, and a holiday home usually does not.
  • The income of your benefits partner and other residents usually counts too.
  • Huurtoeslag is not paid automatically: you apply for it in Mijn toeslagen on the Belastingdienst website. Its trial calculation (proefberekening) shows what you would get.
