US announces new sanctions on International Criminal Court in The Hague

The Dutch foreign minister says the new US sanctions, which take effect in six months, will seriously affect the work of the court based in The Hague.

Den Haag, Zuid-Holland

The United States announced a new series of sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague on Friday. "We will prohibit transactions with this rogue court, cut them off from resources and curb their ability to function," the US statement says.

Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Berendsen (CDA) said the functioning of the court will be "seriously affected". The sanctions only take effect in six months, he said, and in the meantime efforts will be made to reach a solution with the Americans.

The court has responded by calling on its member states for support. It asked them to work to ensure it can keep carrying out its work.
