Student loan interest rises in 2027 for current and former students

If you have a student loan, you will pay more interest from 2027, and people on the older 15-year scheme face the biggest jump.

Interest rates on student loans in the Netherlands will go up in 2027. The increase hits both current students and former students who are still repaying.

The biggest rise is for former students who borrowed before 2015. They repay over 15 years, and their rate goes up by nearly 1 percentage point, from 2.29 percent to 3.28 percent.

The rise is smaller for most current students, who repay over 35 years. Their rate goes from 2.33 percent to 2.7 percent.

Why the schemes differ

The student loan rate is based on the interest rate the government pays to borrow. The gap between the two schemes comes from different calculation methods.

It is not clear how many former students are affected. Estimates range from 250,000 to 740,000 people.
