One dead, two seriously injured in three-car crash on A16 near Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht
A crash involving three cars on the A16 towards Rotterdam on Monday afternoon killed one person and closed three lanes.
Three cars collided on the A16 motorway near Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht on Monday afternoon, on the carriageway towards Rotterdam. One person died and two others were seriously injured, a police spokesperson said.
Three lanes were closed. The Moerdijkbrug towards Rotterdam was blocked, and delays between the Klaverpolder and Ridderkerk junctions reached about an hour at around 15:00. The road was expected to reopen around 18:00.
Rijkswaterstaat, the national roads agency, set up a diversion for traffic towards Rotterdam from the Klaverpolder junction via the A17, A59, A29 and A15. A spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat West-Nederland-Zuid advised drivers to take the diversion, as it is faster for now.
A trauma helicopter came to the scene and landed on the motorway itself. Several ambulances also attended. A tent was put up on the carriageway to screen the victims from view.
