Tourist rental law change takes effect on 1 November

An amendment to the tourist rental act takes effect on 1 November 2026 and forces rental platforms to hand over data on short-term lets to municipalities that ask for it.

An amendment to the Wet toeristische verhuur (tourist rental act) takes effect on 1 November 2026. It gives municipalities more insight into tourist rental and more ways to steer it, the government says. That allows more targeted action against unwanted situations and helps keep a balance between tourism, housing and liveability in neighbourhoods.

Why it matters

  • Rental platforms must keep data on short-term rentals and share it.
  • Municipalities with a registration requirement for tourist rental can request that data.
  • The mandatory data sharing for online platforms has applied since 1 July 2026.

Municipalities with a registration requirement for tourist rentals can request the data to check, for example, whether a home is rented out more often than is allowed.

The law brings Dutch rules in line with European rules on short-term rental and data sharing. The law and the accompanying decree on registering tourist rental of homes (Besluit registratie toeristische verhuur van woonruimte) are published in the Staatsblad, the official gazette, as Staatsblad 2026, 231 and Staatsblad 2026, 266.
