Ongoing Lorry gets stuck on Merwedebrug cycle path despite heavy-vehicle ban
A lorry became stuck on the cycle path of the A27 Merwedebrug on Tuesday afternoon, months after heavy lorries and coaches were banned from the weakened bridge.
A lorry became stuck on the cycle path of the Merwedebrug on the A27, between Gorinchem and Sleeuwijk, on Tuesday afternoon. Road inspectors from Rijkswaterstaat were on their way to guide the driver off the bridge.
A Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson said: "Our road inspector and the police are on site to see how we will resolve this."
Since mid-July, heavy lorries and coaches have been banned from the Merwedebrug. The bridge is weaker than first thought. It has been causing problems for months.
Many drivers have ignored the ban. During a special enforcement week, 215 fines were issued. The checks mainly targeted lorries with foreign licence plates.
