Drenthe funds €148,190 wolf-protection pilot for grazing cattle

The province of Drenthe is paying for a trial of camera technology meant to protect grazing animals in areas where wolves live.

The province of Drenthe is giving €148,190 in subsidy to a pilot testing new technology to protect grazing animals in areas where wolves are found. The pilot combines AI image recognition, wolf-deterrent measures and an early-warning system.

The trial takes place with a herd of cattle used for nature management in a large nature area. The animals live in a natural setting with big open spaces and changing conditions.

Henk Emmens, the Drenthe provincial executive member for nature, said the province wants to support animal keepers. "We are constantly looking for ways to support animal keepers in protecting their animals. With this pilot we are investigating whether new technology can help with that. The results will provide valuable knowledge for future measures in areas where wolves occur."
