Cabinet, unions and employers hold first talks as strike actions pause
Unions have suspended their strike actions while the cabinet, unions and employers work towards a social agreement by spring.
The cabinet and the social partners, the employers' organisations and the trade unions, held their first meeting after months of strikes. They met at the Catshuis, the prime minister's official residence.
Union leaders confirmed that strike actions have been suspended for the time being. The parties agreed there is urgency to continue the talks.
Prime Minister Jetten said the actual negotiations still need to start. The aim is to reach a social agreement (sociaal akkoord) in the coming spring. Jetten also said it will not be easy to get there.
What the unions want
Union federation FNV chair Spekman said there is no assignment to achieve a specific amount of budget cuts. He wants to discuss improvements to unemployment and disability benefits.
Catshuis
The Catshuis is the official residence of the Dutch Prime Minister, located in The Hague. It serves as both a home and the workplace where the PM conducts official business and hosts important meetings. The building is a symbol of Dutch executive power and is often used for high-level negotiations with political parties, social partners, and international guests.
FNV (Federatie Nederlandse Vakbeweging)
The FNV is the largest labor union confederation in the Netherlands, representing workers across many sectors including transport, healthcare, construction, and public services. It negotiates with employers and government on behalf of its members regarding wages, working conditions, and labor rights. The FNV plays a central role in Dutch industrial relations and collective bargaining.
Sociaal akkoord
A sociaal akkoord is a broad agreement negotiated between the Dutch government, labor unions, and employer organizations on major workplace and economic policies. These accords typically cover wages, working conditions, pensions, and social benefits, and reflect the Dutch tradition of consensus-based policymaking called the 'polder model.' Such agreements are significant because they set the framework for labor relations and social policy across the entire country.
