Almost a quarter of Dutch internet subscriptions hit 1 Gbps or more
The Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) says faster subscriptions are gaining ground, even though 50-100 Mbps is enough for many households, and mobile data use hit a record in the second quarter of 2026.
Internet subscriptions with a bandwidth of 300 Mbps or more are becoming more popular, the quarterly Telecommonitor of the ACM for the second quarter of 2026 shows. Nearly a quarter of connections (24.9%) have a speed of 1 Gbps or higher.
For the first time the Telecommonitor distinguishes four speed segments: 30-100 Mbps, 100-300 Mbps, 300-1000 Mbps and 1 Gbps or higher. Of all subscriptions, 46% are in the 100-300 Mbps category and over 21% in the 300-1000 Mbps category. The two fastest segments, 300-1000 Mbps and 1 Gbps or higher, grew fastest compared with the previous quarter. The chart below leaves out the slowest segment, 30-100 Mbps.

The growth is striking, the ACM says, because households often need only a relatively low speed. Earlier ACM research found that 50-100 Mbps is enough for many households, but that online speed advice and upselling often lead to higher speeds being bought. The ACM advises consumers to look critically at whether a fast subscription is needed and, at the end of a contract, to compare all providers again.
Telecoms providers are obliged to give customers good information every year and at the end of the contract term. The ACM recently published draft policy rules to clarify this obligation.
Mobile data use rose 4.7% in the second quarter to 856 million GB, well above the record of 829 million GB in the fourth quarter of 2025. The number of SIM cards for (smart) devices rose to 22.1 million, an increase of 3.8%.
Calling minutes keep falling. Mobile callers made 7.7 billion minutes of calls, against 7.9 billion in the previous quarter. Fixed-line calling fell from 0.86 billion minutes in the first quarter to 0.80 billion in the second, and 3.63 million fixed telephone connections remain.
The Telecommonitor now adds a category of homes connected, meaning fibre up to the meter cupboard, alongside homes passed, meaning fibre up to the property boundary. Homes passed total 9.18 million (+1.4%) and homes connected 6.69 million (+1.8%). The number of fibre connections actually in use is 3.75 million, up 1.6% on the previous quarter. The general picture matches earlier quarters: fibre's share grows at the expense of copper (xDSL), while the number of cable connections stays stable.
