Aalten takes asylum minister to court over 200 reception places

The eastern Gelderland municipality says it has to house too many asylum seekers. The administrative court in Arnhem will hear the case on Tuesday morning.

The municipality of Aalten is taking asylum minister Bart van den Brink to court. The minister requires Aalten to house 200 asylum seekers, while an earlier indicative allocation would have required 157 reception places. Aalten considers 200 too high.

Aalten is under ministry supervision because it takes in too few asylum seekers. The municipality has said it is working hard on reception: "We are working hard on it." It added that providing reception takes more than designating a location. It needs a solution that works in terms of space, technology and public support.

Earlier this month Aalten announced that it has three possible locations for asylum reception in mind. Residents can comment on them on the municipality's website until 1 November.
