Police in Zoetermeer arrested three men on 11 October on suspicion of posing as police officers to get into the home of an 80-year-old man. The victim called the police at about 15.05 that day, police said. Officers then stopped a car near his home and, according to police, found his jewellery on its three occupants.

According to police, the group had been in contact with the man since Thursday 8 October. The suspects are said to have visited him at home several times and gained entry by posing as officers. Police said they told him they were investigating a mole at a well-known bank. "This was of course a pretext," police said. Police said money and jewellery were taken.

Police said the three people in the car gave an explanation for why they were there that officers found implausible. A search turned up jewellery, which police said proved to be the victim's. All three were arrested.

The suspects are aged 36, 19 and 17. The 36-year-old and the 19-year-old are from Rotterdam, the 17-year-old from Zeist. After questioning, one of the three was released. The other two will be brought before the examining magistrate (rechter-commissaris).

## Background

- **rechter-commissaris**: An examining magistrate is a judge at a Dutch district court who supervises a criminal investigation before the case goes to trial. The rechter-commissaris decides on coercive measures such as pre-trial detention (voorlopige hechtenis) and approves certain special investigative powers, such as wiretaps. Suspects brought before this judge are being held while the investigation continues.
