Prime minister Rob Jetten and his partner Nicolás Keenan announced on Instagram that they expect their first child in spring 2027. They said the child will be born through high-tech surrogacy, with a surrogate mother and an egg donor.

The couple posted a photo of an ultrasound scan with the words: “There is someone very special on the way.” They thanked their egg donor, the surrogate Lisa, and their families. “Without you, none of this would have been possible,” they wrote.

On Monday, the website of D66, Jetten’s party, also carried the news. It said that with a surrogate mother and an egg donor, “that dream now seems to be coming true”.

On 14 December the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of parliament, takes up a bill on surrogacy. The bill provides that a child falls under the authority of the intended parents from birth. It also allows intended parents to post appeals for a surrogate.

The SGP says the bill must be withdrawn. Otherwise the party threatens not to support the tax plan of the Jetten minority cabinet.

## Background

- **D66 (Democraten 66)**: D66 (Democrats 66) is a Dutch political party that takes part in national, provincial, municipal and European elections and is represented in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the States General. It presents itself as a progressive liberal party, focused on democratic reform and civil liberties.
- **SGP (Staatkundig Gereformeerde Partij)**: The SGP is a Dutch political party based on Reformed Protestant (Gereformeerde) Christian principles. It takes part in national elections and sends members to the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer), where it votes on bills and government plans like the other parties. Its positions on bills and whether it supports a cabinet are set out in parliament, so its stance can decide whether a minority cabinet has a majority for a plan.
