No trains are running between Amsterdam Centraal and Amsterdam Muiderpoort on Sunday afternoon after a vehicle hit a rail viaduct. Trains stopped running on the stretch around 12:00. NS expects them to resume around 13:45.

**Why it matters**

- Trains between Amsterdam and Utrecht, and between Amsterdam and Hilversum, are also disrupted.
- Trains are still running to Amsterdam Centraal and Amsterdam Zuid via other routes, and travellers can still get from Utrecht to Amsterdam Zuid.
- NS train tickets are valid on the Amsterdam metro during the disruption, an NS spokesperson said.

ProRail, the rail network manager, is inspecting the viaduct to see whether it is still safe for trains.

An NS spokesperson said the timing was particularly unfortunate, because many travellers want to reach Amsterdam for the Rode Lijn (Red Line) demonstration. “We were well prepared, but some travellers now have to choose alternative transport in Amsterdam,” the spokesperson said.

NS advises travellers to keep an eye on its journey planner.

## Background

- **ProRail**: ProRail is the Dutch rail network manager, the organisation responsible for the country's railway infrastructure. It maintains and manages the tracks, signals, switches, bridges and viaducts, and it plans and controls train traffic on the network. Train operators such as NS run the trains themselves, while ProRail keeps the rail infrastructure safe and available for them to use.
