Police arrested a 26-year-old man from Roermond on Thursday afternoon in Echt, Limburg, after he drove into a Dutch police car around 15:00. Belgian officers had chased his vehicle, and Dutch police assisted.

The crash happened on the Loperweg, where the suspect was driving the wrong way. One police officer was injured and taken to hospital for a check-up.

After the collision the suspect tried to flee on foot. He was arrested after officers threatened to use a stun gun.

Police have cordoned off a large section of the road for further investigation because of the wreckage and the danger it poses.

A Belgian unit may continue a chase on Dutch soil under the Benelux police treaty, police say. Limburg has 351 kilometres of border with Belgium and Germany.

Police stress that violence against officers and emergency workers is unacceptable, and say they always give such cases priority.

## Background

- **Benelux-politieverdrag**: The Benelux police treaty is an agreement between Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg on cross-border police cooperation. It sets out when officers from one of these countries may continue a pursuit, or carry out certain police tasks, on the territory of another. It matters in border regions such as Limburg, where suspects often cross into Belgium or Germany and police work regularly spans national borders.
