Schools in Maastricht have sent parents a letter warning about social media calls to go into the city on Saturday to riot and loot, a spokesperson for the school umbrella body LVO said. The letter followed consultation with the municipality and the police.

The municipality and police are preparing for possible unrest around a call to come to the Vrijthof, the city-centre square, on Saturday. Some messages on social media speak of a protest, others of riots and looting. The municipality says "visible and non-visible measures" are being prepared where needed, but will make no announcements about the concrete deployment.

"We take these signals seriously and are in close contact with the police," a municipal spokesperson said.

The police say they know of the messages and the letter. "We understand there is unrest. We are monitoring the situation and are explicitly asking parents to keep an eye on their children's social media use and talk to them about it," a police spokesperson said.

The schools wrote that it is not currently known whether the calls will lead to activities or unrest. They warn that young people may go out of curiosity or group pressure, without realising what they could end up in. Parents are asked to discuss that "just having a look" can put someone in a situation that quickly escalates.
